A common question that most ladies are thinking once in a while is how do I actually clean my lipstick and how do I clean my lipstick so it is sanitised?
Because you’ve probably bought an $80 lipstick or even a cheap lipstick that you just love and you think ohh it’s getting a bit grotty so I’d love to know how I could make sure it’s free of bacteria and clean but you don’t want to throw it out and waste it.
As you probably know a lot of makeup artists do reuse their brushes because they do sanitise things and they do reuse lipsticks but often they take out a bit of lipstick and break it off and then use it for a customer so it’s not that unhygienic.
So that is one option for you if you’re really a bit particular about bacteria, you can slice a bit off every time you use your lipstick and paint it on with a lip brush.
In terms of how you’re going to clean it so to clean and sanitise particularly solid lipsticks, you want to slightly push it up in the packaging and you want to get some isopropyl alcohol around 70 to 90 percent.
You can buy these at either supermarkets, hardware stores, Amazon, I’ve even seen them at office stores, and you want to dip it in the alcohol for about 10 to 15 seconds.
Then get something sterile like a tissue or a fresh piece of paper that you can wipe a layer off onto or even wipe it off onto your clean hand so you’re going to roll that first layer off. I just rub the first layer onto my hand to get it clean or onto a piece of paper.
The reason why I don’t always use tissues is because sometimes tissue leaves like a lint behind or toilet paper and I don’t want that on my lips later.
Another method that people use is literally scraping the top part off so scraping the top part of the lipstick off and discarding it. You can use a sharp device for this and something sterile as well. Sometimes people use a Q-tip but it’s often not strong enough.
With things like lip glosses it’s really hard to sanitise them because they do get dipped back into the product with the doe-foot, so the sponge on the end of the wand. You can completely take out that bit and put some makeup remover on it, thoroughly wash it and dry it.
I will also recommend getting a tissue or something like a sanitary wipe to wipe the inside of the lip gloss tube.
If you can poke it in with like a Q-tip to wipe off that residue because that’s the bit that gets swiped the most. So wipe that bit off and wipe around the tube where you can get to.
Well you can have a look at the lip gloss content if it’s a see-through one and you can check for murkiness. If it looks cloudy or there’s dark spots or clumps it’s most likely been contaminated with mold.
And of course if you feel any not normal kind of tingling and stinging, if it wasn’t there before, then it’s no good anymore and time for the bin!
So don’t throw away your lipsticks and particularly solid lipsticks because they’re solid, just make sure that you are giving them a clean every now and again depending on your use.
Liquid lip glosses are trickier and sometimes it’s safer to replace them if they’ve been heavily used or look off.
This little bit of maintenance can save you money and keep your favourite shades going longer without the worry of bacteria.
